More About The Soldier’s Tale:
The Soldier’s Tale (L’Histoire du Soldat) by Igor Stravinsky is based on the Russian tale, “The Runaway Soldier and the Devil.” It was written in 1918, as jazz was just beginning. Stravinsky uses tango rhythms, marches, and a waltz to tell the story of a soldier who trades his violin to the Devil for untold wealth. Performers include the Narrator, the Devil, the Soldier and the Princess. The performers are accompanied by seven musicians: a violin, bass, clarinet, bassoon, cornet, trombone, and percussion.
